The Red Dot Film Series focuses on current emerging and established filmmakers, each bringing a singular voice to the history of avant-garde filmmaking situated in the San Francisco Bay Area. Instead of the programmer or curator selecting an artist's work, filmmakers are invited to develop a program embedded in their own relationship to their practice. Artists are encouraged to show lesser known or even unknown projects, especially ones foundational to their artistic growth. In addition, filmmakers are encouraged to select other artists' films (or media) which have impacted their creative development, or where a clear connection might not be apparent to those already familiar with their work.
The 'Red Dot' title is taken from a psychology experiment developed by Gordon Gallup Jr. which determines if an animal possesses the ability to self-recognize. For the test, an animal is marked with paint or a sticker and then given access to a mirror. If it touches or examines the mark, the behavior is interpreted as a confirmation that the animal sees its reflection as an image of itself, rather than that of another.
